2026 Update: This challenge was originally completed in November 2024 and posted on another site. I am uploading this record here for completeness.

Brief

This is a photo of a resort located on an island.
a) What is the name of the resort?
b) What are the coordinates of the island?
c) In which cardinal direction was the camera facing when the photo was taken?

Method

What is the name of the resort?

A Google Lens search brings up this website for the Oan Resort in Chuuk, Micronesia.

What are the coordinates of the island?

Google Maps informs me that the island of Oan in Micronesia has the coordinates 7.363269475869274, 151.7560074554341.

In which cardinal direction was the camera facing when the photo was taken?

I tackled this by looking at a few other angles of the island that were shown on Google Maps, and comparing the landmasses in the background to the 2D satellite view.

I surmised that the island in the back-right of the above shot would be Eot, and the landmass to the back-left would be the region of Wonip.

There were two other landmasses to the opposite side of the island, however, being Parem Island and Totiw Island.

To compare, I switched over to the terrain view and looked at the elevations of the land — my first choice, Eot and Wonip, fit the elevations seen in the brief picture much better, and further examination convinced me further by showing the taller hill/mountain in the distance in the region of Udot.

To get this shot, the camera would have to be facing North-West.
